When my closest friend AP and Boston Globe photographer, Oliver Noonan Jr. was shot down in a command helicopter close to Danang, the Americal Division mutinied for days rather than retrieve the bodies of Ollie and the many US colonels that died in that crash. Despite the intense fighting Horst and Peter Arnett made it to the crash site and recovered Ollie's camera and final roll of film which he brought back to Ollie's father, Oliver Noonan, another well known and highly regarded Boston photographer who was a father to me and taught me my craft. Thank you Horst for everything, your legend and life work will stand as will our memories.

Re: The Digital Journalist

Great story. But newspapers are facing two challenges:

1. Insufficient bandwidth. It’s just too painful to watch video on most connections. 3G mobile devices are particularly bad.

Then why do television stations do reasonably well with online video?

2. Identity, branding and presentation. Viewers/users are conditioned to expect video from TV outlets and static content from newspapers. Also, newspaper executives have the same comfort level so they relegate video to second-tier presentation. Also, many newspaper staffs are not versed in video storytelling or assignment techniques.

People are still using video and their consumption is growing. Newspapers need to stop thinking of themselves as news”papers” and assertively enter the post-paper media world."

Re: The Digital Journalist

That penultimate sentence seems to be true in my case, as I don't have any problem viewing video from most sources. Man, these threads can live on forever apparently. OK. No, you are wrong. Fundamentally wrong. Anyone can be a journalist. Anyone. That is the whole basis of our country. So much so that it is enshrined in the Constitution: Congress shall make no law abridging a free press. That ensures that anyone may write or publish whatever they want. In other countries they license journalists. It is a profession. Not here. And for a good reason. We want as free a press as possible. Open to everyone all the time. Great literature comes from any Joe writing what's in their head. Great art comes from anyone throwing paint on a canvas. Great music starts with your neighbor's kid banging out a song in the garage. So too with journalism. The very term 'professional journalist' is an oxymoron. Great journalist, sure. Highly paid journalism - OK. But it's not a profession. It's a craft. And as a former professor at both The Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University and NYU's Journalism School, I can assure you I am right.

Re: Citizen Journalism: A Recipe for Disaster - The Digital Journalist

it's not about free press, it's about having professional journalists whom are trained and educated in the fundamental and ethical values of reporting do the reporting. There are copyright and defamation laws to consider as well as the respect for peoples privacy.

Not anyone can be a journalist.
