The Digital Journalist: Callie Shell: Obama - The Digital Journalist

I will remember the look on the faces of those two Black kids who didn't take their eyes off Obama for as long as I live. A photo that brilliantly captures the historic shifts that occur so infrequently in our lives that they have an imprint on your soul.
  • daniel · 1 year ago
That is the one that stuck out for me as well. I have it saved as my desktop background now as a reminder of what someone like Barack can do for the country.

Thank you for a stunning selection of pictures of the man many hope will be President of the United States. Your wonderful moments, so varied and so well made, gave me hope, brought tears to my eyes, and made me dare to think that something will finally change. You alone have recorder an extremely important piece of history, whatever the outcome will be. Thank you. -JEA

Great pictures, my favorites are the barber shop and the holes in the shoe soles. I met Callie several times during the Gore VP years, she's a nice person and i think that shows in the access she has and the pictures we see.
  • Old Lady · 1 year ago
So many people mentioned the shoe-sole picture, this old lady has to link back to the historic photo of Adlai Stevenson with a hole in the sole of his shoe. My first-time vote was for Stevenson. Voting has never been the same since - until 2008!!!
Heartfelt thanks for these superb photos, which I trust will one day be made available as a printed album.
  • Susan See · 1 year ago
Thank you for this amazing insight into our next president....I have to believe that he will be our next president. The images are extraordinary not only in technical areas but also in how you draw us, the viewer, into the lives of all photographed. I really love the image of the two young boys looking upward, their eyes say it all. Again thank you!

I am sitting in Detroit writing this... It makes me full of hope and desperate to see Obama as our leader. The prospect for CHANGE that he proposes allows children and the adults we have become to transform this nation into something other than what has been crammed down our throat. If I may borrow Michelle Obama's words,

"For the first time, in a long time, I am proud of this country..."

I didn't want this gallery to end...

I was caught off guard when so many of the images, particularly the ones of Obama with Michelle and with his girls caused tears to sprout from my eyes. I felt my heart jump with joy for the tender moments you had captured.

I, too, have been following Obama's progress since 2004. After I heard him speak at the 2004 DNC, I said my family and boyfriend (husband now), "That man is going to be President someday." I have stopped believing in that possibility. And I can't even vote for him because I am Canadian (although married to an American, so perhaps one day, I will vote in an American election...).

Callie, your gallery helped me finally articulate what it is I love and admire so much about Obama: He's taught me that hope is more powerful than I could have imagined, that it can fortify me and propel me forward when everything else around me has succumbed to chaos, greed, violence and anything else that seems to pull the human spirit down.

Regardless of what happens on November 4, 2008, I feel we are a better world for having heeded Obama's call to hope.
  • renée · 1 year ago
    oops...

that should have read i HAVEN'T stopped believing in that possibility (of Obama becoming President)...

thanks for the great catch, hubby,,,

Now salute your 44th president : BARACK OBAMA!!!!!
Incidentally , my wise old father once gave me some very sage advice as follows : " Don't say so much, and you won't have so much to take back "

    Callie,
I wanted to tell you how completely compelling your Obama work is. As an amateur photographer and someone who looks at photos several hours a day on Flickr, I hope you can appreciate my deep thanks for your work. This image; the two girls in SC; the pullup; the shoes; Michele brushing off his suit; Berlin. Absolutely stunning.
    Best, Kevin
PS, I run Wonkosphere--you might get a kick out of it...

I have to echo what everyone else said...these are amazing photographs, and there were tears in my eyes as I looked at them. You can tell that in those quiet moments, Obama is a man who takes seriously the responsibility voters may place in his hands in a couple of weeks. Great work, Callie; these (and the rest of your photos) should be put into a coffee table book!
  • Dom · 1 year ago
Thank you for these they are beautiful
  • gabe · 1 year ago
The freight elevator shot is, in my opinion, the most profound of the bunch. Obama is exuding an air of confidence that is literally highlighted by the elevator light. Those around him seem to know that they have rounded one of final corners of the long road to the White House. They look as if they know they are in close quarters with a man who is epic and yet grounded.

All in all, a fantastic series that captures this historic candidate. I'm looking forward to shots from election night and the inauguration.

  • klevenstein · 1 year ago
Extremely moving photography (and That One has written and spoken some extremely moving words). Oh, yes... and words do matter; words and pictures have the power change the world, as recorded in our entire history time after time.

I don't want to idolize the man and his family, but I am thrilled to see this history unfolding so rapidly.
  • Ed R · 1 year ago
A sincere thank you to Ms. Shell for the moving and compelling images. I hope you have the opportunity to continue, and wish you well in your future endeavors.
  • Mad to the Skillz · 1 year ago
I am a journalist (12-year vet) and there are some images that really define a person. The shot of the soles of Obama's shoes spoke volumes to me. Seriously, with Palin's folks calling her a hockey mom and Sarah six-pack and running around with $150,000 clothing allowance vs. that shot - wow. I could never imagine an elitist wearing shoes more than once. He is in touch with regular folks - and the shot did bring tears to my eyes.
  • suparna · 1 year ago
the most overused saying about pictures- that they can speak a thousand words, truly does not describe this collection. every single picture spoke millions of words. each one gave a little insight into the man who will become our next president. the beauty and candid simplicity and honesty of the photographs gave new meaning to barack obama, and reminds us all that yes, he is human, but yet he has acheived so much. he is truly genuine.

These photos are not only amazing but inspiring. Barack Obama is a phenomenal person and you can truly see this in the way he interacts with family, friends and the average American person. Theres is nothing I would love to see more than Barack Obama as President. These pictures are exactly why he deserves it!!

Wow. What a beautiful set of photographs. Thank you SO much for them. Really.
  • MQ · 1 year ago
What wonderful photos. They are so real and warm and personal. I've never seen campaign pictures like this. The one I like best is of Obama talking to two people at a rest stop along the highway. I also loved the photo of him hunkered down in a hallway waiting to go on stage, and he's all alone, no handlers, no staff. These are astounding photos of a man who will most likely be our next President. Thank you for this.
  • rashida319 · 1 year ago
That is a truly wonderful picture.
  • justin walder · 1 year ago
these photos are beautiful, esp. the one with obama's worn down shoes (that he'd already had re-soled). we're in an economic crisis, and barack and michelle obama both spend like they understand what normal americans are going through, while john mccain and sarah palin spend ridiculous amounts of money on their wardrobes, while at the same time claim to be normal americans (how many normal americans have several homes and cars?). i also love the photos of barack and michelle. you can see how deep their love for one another is. last but not least, let's not forget the photo of him cleaning up after himself. that photo says a lot about barack obama and his morals to me personally.
  • Jim · 1 year ago
where are the pics of him having a cigerette...or the one where he's standing with Hillary during the national athem with his hands at his side...where are the ones of him visiting the troops before nomination...or the ones with his preacher of 20yrs...come on..if your gonna get real...get real....but im sure you got paid.
  • justin walder · 1 year ago
how about pictures of mccain cheating on his wife. or crashing more planes then he shot down. or giving his vietnam captors information. how about pictures of sarah palin and her sucessionists? or how about photos with HER pastor? where are the photos of palin's $5,000 dresses while michelle wears $35 dollar dresses from the gap? how about photos of palin and at least 1 world leader BEFORE the nomination? oh, that's right. THERE ARE NONE.

    check and mate.

  • honeywild · 1 year ago
I knew he was special the first time I heard his voice, on The Daily Show... I ran into the living room to see who it was. By contrast I cannot find the 'mute' button fast enough when McCain or Palin or GWB speaks.

I will not have you socialist liberals besmirching the name of President-Elect McCain. You know you're losing (AND WILL LOSE) so you resort to unfounded attacks on President-Elect McCain's time in Vietnam. Typical. While your candidate runs away from the campaign, President-Elect McCain will use the time to totally defeat the Junior Socialist from Illinois.

You are a very sad and pathetic individual who is clearly out of touch with reality. How many times do you have to get hit over the head before you finally do something about it? You want four to eight more years of this? Are you kidding me? No thanks! I'm ready for a real change in this country. I believe most of us are. McCain will NOT win for this reason alone. You'll be thankful in a few more years when Barack has gotten us back on track.

Is there anything that you can leave quietly alone without having to tag it with graffiti? It's just vile. There are so many places on the planet where you can have company. Can't you go over there?
  • Priya · 1 year ago
McCain is clearly a good guy, but he's not what America needs, nor what they so decisively chose. As for taking a dig at man for visiting his dying grandmother, (1) where is your basic sense of decency, (2) what happened to the admirable, conservative emphasis on the importance of family, and (3) I guess Obama still trounced McCain, now, didn't he?
  • Mike · 1 year ago
    Callie,

Thank you for giving us an inside look at the man and his campaign. Anyone who's objective at all can see that this campaign is about far more than who will be the better President. Obama carries with him the hope and dreams of a race.

What an amazing piece of photo journalism. Most excellent, thank you!
  • Laura · 1 year ago
The first picture of Obama and Michelle catching a moment while she sleeps with her face next to his defines love to me. The trust that flows between them will transcend all that comes their way. The United States needs them. The world needs them. I need them...to also feel the trust that loves bring. It will be a gentler world. A safer world.
The universe has sent him to show us all a different way.
    VOTE please.......please.

An absolutely stunning series. It shows your dedication to the subject, but also your ability to keep changing up the angle, design and position makes for a strong varied series that lives together. Worth all of your effort!!!!!!
My favorite has to be the image of Mr. Obama cleaning up after himself. A moment absolutely worth capturing! That is an extremely telling example of strong character. For you to appreciate that moment amongst many other countless ones shows a lot!!! I hope he can bring it back.

Your work reflects that hope and I am grateful.

I wear my Obama button to teach school every day in WV. Everyone knows who I am voting for. I see these pictures and I smile thinking about the wonderful candidate that is getting my vote. My vote really didn't count until now. I've put my entire self into it this time. I pray every night that the people in WV will vote for Barack. McCain is leading here. I can't understand why it is so easy for some of us to blindly accept and others can't. He is running against ignorance. The ignorance is coming from the G.O.P. I grew up in a town that had no black people. Today I teach the most precious black children in the world. What a role model Senator Obama has been for them. I wait with "hope" to see the pictures of Barack's beautiful family in the White House.

These pictures are eloquent, deeply personal, and inspirational.Callie has the most fantastic eye for frame, scene, and the deep emotions (both high and low) that come with a campaign of this magnitude. After the election is over, I'd propose composing a coffee-table book featuring her favorite pictures and commentary about the race. Ideally, donate a portion of the proceeds to the charity/cause of Obama's choosing.

It doesn't hurt anything that the man and his family are wonderfully photogenic, but in the end what strikes me more than anything is that first, last, and always, the Obamas are the epitome of what it is to be a FAMILY in America.

Thank you for letting us share in the behind-the-scenes of Obama's American Dream.

    Beautiful photo essay.
What's the old saying, sure applies here.
If the racists could expand their vision wide enough to encompass this work, they would then be hard put to look for reasons (lapel pin, hand over heart, dining on aborted children when visiting his African relatives {OK, the last an absurd Rovian fantasy}) to not vote for Obama.
Katrina and now Obama have exposed my city of birth and current residence as full of closet racists. Quite the change from the New Orleans of my childhood; blatant racism and rampant hypocrisy.

The entire pictorial is beyond words. However, the images of the family, in general, and of Barack and Michelle in particular speak to me on a soul-deep level. It is difficult to explain the affect it has on one's psyche to never see postive, loving images of people who look like you. Seeing the partnership, respect, love and sensuality between these two is so awe-some and awe inspiring that I can barely convey the emotion. Thank you for your appreciative and talented eye. What you offer some of us is more than moving images of a politician but tangible evidence of our humanity and worth. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I believe in my soul he is our next president. That being said, I really hope you will be his personal photographer. You have an amazing eye. These photos bring me to tears. They brought me back to what I was feeling during different points of the Obama campaign. Amazing.

    Hello from Europe.
It's reassuring to see and hear you people holding such high hopes in a President.
I sincerely hold my doubts on the issue. I dont regard any US President with such capability to change a diseased government structure. He really is photogenic, and being really well marketed, these photos show a good illusion of the simple and incorruptible man we all would like him to be... I hope thats true. I hope we can see him the same way in 4 years...

This was a fantastic journey inside the dedication, grit and vision it takes to be a "first family." Thank you for showing the internal workings of what could become one of the most inspirational politicians in this generation. I have black sons. I am a black wife and small business owner. I am not "Joe the Plumber." I'm smarter than that and I want more for this country that what we've been experiencing so far. I think, I hope Barack wants that for us and his family as well. John McCain has served this country well, but I think now is not his time. Now is the time for a person who can embody the spirit of diversity and unification, which is what the U.S. truly is now. I voted already. I live in South Florida, land of everyone from a foreign country. A Haitian woman left the polls before me, and she was proud to be here. Proud to vote and proud to be an American. There are no un-American places in America. I like Barack because he ran his race with dignity. I voted for Barack because I want others to view us with dignity and I want us to be dignified. Your photos show a dignified, unified, loving American family. Thank you so very, very much.

Absolutely incredible photographs. While the shot of the two young boys looking up at the Senator is powerful, my favorite one is definitely him cleaning up after himself while holding an ice cream cone. Unguarded moments like that really give insight into the real personality behind great figures.

I remember watching his DNC speech in 2004 and passing the video to all of my friends. I'm so proud that this man is this close to leading the country.

    Thanks for the wonderful images.

Galleries on presidential candidates normally don´t make me weep. But this time it´s different. The last few times i shed that much tears was when I heard about the death of Rabin, heard Martin Luther King´s famous speech or saw Jesus suffering in "The Passion of Christ".

There´s something to the pictures one can´t describe. There´s something that touches me deep inside.

This is not just the election of yet another president. This is history in the making. And I know that the hopes and prayers of so many who look for a better future are with Barack Obama.

Ive saved that TIME cover picture of our future President since Callie Shell managed to get that great, warm human smile from Barack Obama. Even then I wondered, Wow! Who took that picture? You must be one great photojournalist to get to know him so well. Thanks for these pictures, and keep on going for the next eight years when he is our President. I was in Berlin and we Americans abroad will be so proud to have the intelligent and inspiring Barack Obama as our President-Elect! Dennis Phillips, Rhein-Main for Obama, Frankfurt, Germany

Thank you for seeing the man before we saw him. The image of him cleaning the ice cream counter tells you all you need to know about the man - attention to detail, manners and simple. Now that is what a photographer needs to do with their every effort. Tell me something I don't know, since I could not be there to experience it myself. I am lifted. Thank you Callie!!!!

Wonderful photo series. Like others, I too was moved to tears. Impacting me most were the photos of Barack and his family. I (a caucasian, middle class Iowan) have young children whose increasingly uncertain futures have me deeply concerned. These photos give me hope for them- hope that just maybe they will benefit from finally having a true 'president for the people' who will work to better the lives of the status quo versus the chosen few. Truly inspiring pictures. Thank you!

Callie, Thank you so much for sharing these images. Your intuition and timing is incredible; you have that rare gift of seeing inside the subject with your camera. This election is a very emotional one for many people in this country, whether they realize it or not. Your images connect us to Obama (in this case) in a way I have not seen in any other photographs of him. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
  • Terry · 1 year ago
Dear Callie, thank you so much for sharing photos of Obama. I stumbled upon this website after hopping through Twitter feeds... and you've done such a marvellous work. It just moves me to see how down-to-earth and true-to-heart Obama is. I've never ever seen a presidential candidate for being so empathetic, caring, understanding and yet being passionate and enthusiastic about his cause.

I could see tears in people's eyes, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, gender, social divide, income, dreams... when he said those words on the stage.

Sometimes I pray every country's president could be half as good as him :) after winning the US elections, Mr Obama, please run for Earth's president. We need leaders like you. Thank you so much!

He's destined to be the US president, from the start. Welcome, CHANGE ;)

The shot with his wife Michelle and also shots of him with the girls actually had me crying can't explain it. I wish him, his family and the people of the United States of America good fortune for the future as you have shown the whole world how the people cam move mountains as one. I have no words to describe how emotionally lifted I am by the pictures you've captured! Daily, I scour the internet to find something new, something fresh of a FAMILY catapulted into the highest office of this nation. The Obama's bring something to this position I have not seen depicted by any other Presidential couple: LOVE, RESPECT, ADMIRATION, (feel free to add your own descriptors). I cry EVERYTIME I see these two in action either alone, together and, with their two daughters. CHANGE has certainly come. Callie, you had already captured in photo what Mr. Obama later spoke: anything is possible as long as you believe YES I/WE CAN. May God continue to bless you and your work.

Callie while Obama and Michelle (and the kids, too) are quite photogenic, you've managed to capture something most other photographers have not. Perhaps it is due to your having more access combined with exceptional talent, however, the intimacy and sensitivity in your photographs depict the character of Obama and his family's authenticity. By adding the many faces filled with hope, young and old alike, accentuates the promise of better tomorrows.

Callie, it takes a true artist to see beyond the obvious and look with "soulful" eyes. You have given us a perspective of "the man" who happens to be a politician. Even those images that do not have Barack Obama as the subject, evoke feelings and emotions of an individual who captures the heart. My favorites are the one with Michelle asleep on his shoulder and the eaten away soles of his shoes...Perfection at it's best. Keep up the good work.

My photographs from the presidential campaign of Barack Obama have been published all over the world and are routinely seen in the pages of Time magazine, where I am a contract photographer. Even in these days of declining circulation, Time is still the world’s largest newsmagazine and their reach is enormous.

When The Digital Journalist approached me last year I was honored. I knew of the work and effort that went into the site and considered it a formidable trade publication.

I was amazed at the response.

Within days of the launch, I began to receive a flood of notes from people who had seen the work on the site. Mind you, much of this work had already been seen in Time, on their website and in other major publications around the world. Requests for my work because of this exposure began pouring in and links to the work continue to generate interest to this day.

Frankly it was a real David and Goliath story. I had more comments from my colleagues and viewers of the work than I could believe possible or keep up with.

As traditional and electronic publications struggle, I’m convinced The Digital Journalist has carved out a new place that combines trade journal, professional community and is a legitimate and effective venue for visual storytelling.

By calling Michelle Obama pretty, 'a big hit' etc you are just making a fool of yourself, she is not even pretty to millions or democrats, most men find her quite ugly.
